The headphones that look unknown, large, and large buttons, large buttons, and the year. Located in the BIC Festival 2022 Exhibition Hall, these items were enough to stop the passing people. Those who have stopped walking in turn, wearing old headphones, and entering the Moss code according to the instructions of the game screen. If you look at them without a screen, it is reminiscent of a spy movie.
Aljo Games' director Alex, who participated in the BIC 2022 with this mysterious controller, is a designer who is steadily participating in ALT.CONTROL.GDC, an annual exotic controller exhibition held at the world's largest game developer conference. He was happy to accept the field interview, and he gave a detailed story about what he wanted to tell through Moss, with the reason he visited Korea with a unique controller.
■ Game made by a developer who is a 'true' developer in a unique controller Q. First of all, please introduce yourself.
He is developing games in Yorkshire, England, and has been developing for about 10 years this year. Now, as the director of Aljo Games, it has been developing 'Moss' for about a year.
Q. I wonder how the BIC Festival 2022 attended.
= I planned to participate only at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show (TGS 2022), and if a Korean developer who met at GDC in March was planning to go to Tokyo, I recommended to apply to BIC before. Thanks to this, I am having a great time in Korea. We also meet people who develop a variety of games, and have a good time watching the projects of various studios.
Q. Have you ever visited Korea before?
This is the first time I visited Asia (laughs). It was Turkiye that I went far the east until that time. Before I came down to Busan, I had a chance to spend a few days in Seoul, but I am having a great time.
Q. How is Moss developed this time?
= In fact, 'Moss' is a game with its own history. Personally, I have a background on the physical design side, so I often go to showcases like alt.control.gdc, which develops original controllers. A long time ago, in a workshop related to experimental designs, I made a telegraph by connecting very basic switches and wiring, and made a simple game of the board game 'Battle Show' style.
Since then, I like the design and received a good evaluation, making the game back into a flash version. However, the game, which was the predecessor of 'Moss' while proceeding with other projects, had no choice but to stay for a long time.
The reason why the flash-based game was able to rebuild the Unity Engine was able to challenge again by receiving support for game development supported by the British government about five years later. According to the development process, the controller, which was quite poor at first, was able to develop into a version that seemed to be displayed in the booth today.
Q. Indeed, the antique controller equipment in the booth is eye-catching.
Perhaps you can boast that you are exhibiting the oldest hardware controller throughout this event. This is because the headphones are almost 100 years old.
I learned that the headphones were things in the 1930s, thanks to any family visited in the UK. A child and his father visited the booth, and his father's father remembers a picture taken with the same headphone (controller). It turns out that his father's father was a full-length knight in the days of serving as a navy during World War II.
In addition, the game shows the game to the audience at the event site, and the mouse and keyboard were too common. Personally, I feel good because I can showcase experimental controllers as I have a body in the Alt.Control scene.
Q. No, how could you get headphones in the 1930s?
= I found it on eBay (laughs). In fact, an acquaintance who knows and knows the game he is making and told me to order the eBay to order. At that time, I forgot it and remembered for a while, but I met again one day and delivered the headphones directly. I have been able to use the headphones that I have received in the game, and I am pleased to be able to give a realistic experience to gamers who visited the site.
Q. I wonder what the game is in the background of the game.
= 'Moss' is a game that deals with secret operations and first-class secrets in the dark, which is not recorded, in the dark. For example, they are very decisive missions that have great results in war, but they are unknown to the public. In the game, the player becomes a full-length knight and is given a mission to solve a huge war through Moss code and various information.
Q. Can Moss code be used in other forms in addition to destroying enemy boats that can be experienced in this exhibition?
= The exhibition at this site is the training mode of the game. Before experiencing a full-fledged campaign, it is a content that trains your agility and prepares to get used to Moss's code and gameplay.
In the actual game, three main battlefields are waiting for you. You may be tasked with escorting allies' submarines or ships, missions to find trenches or enemy tunnels in land warfare, and in air warfare, identify the location of enemy reconnaissance and quickly shot down, or destroy enemy propaganda. Various missions are available.
Q. A particular word on each stage constitutes the lower grid, which is also to learn words in training mode?
At this point, there are about 600 words related to collisions with the World War. The goal of these grids was to use it as the purpose of deploying the word according to the narrative in the campaign.
Personally, what I want to deliver from Moss is the system that includes narrative elements and gameplay at once. It takes more time to implement, but it's also fun to change words in the middle as the player decisions or narrative progress.
For example, when the enemy's gas is in the camp during the mission of the allies, the word is changed to Suffocate or Chlorine. In addition, narrative elements are devising various gimmicks that can affect gameplay. German agents are preparing to interfere with your interface or to provide fun in psychological parts.
** Q. I wonder if I can expect a hardcore difficulty that I do not give the Moss code hint in the future.
= At present, there are two plans for difficulty. Although there is a hard mode, you will have to find a way to unlock it. Hard mode is planned on the line, which is generally difficult, such as the interface limited and the game becomes more difficult.
The other is to add a mode for them so that the enthusiasm of the telegraph community can be saved in the game. In the option menu, we plan to adjust the point of the moss code and the time to recognize the lines, so that you can enter the code quickly like a real general article. I hope it will be a satisfactory game for the speed runners.
Q. I checked on the Steam page and said that Korean is not supported. I wonder if there is no plan to support localized languages later.
= In fact, now, I have a willingness to search for publishers and, of course, want to support more languages. However, even if you support the language of other countries, the core elements of the game, Moss's signs, or the English word of the grid of the battlefield will not be changed.
The interesting thing about the Moss code is that it uses different systems in each country, for example, China's commercial code is 2,000 characters. Every time the language changes, it cannot be reflected in this all, so the language used on the battlefield will be about English, French and German, and the narrative elements, tutorials, and menu languages have localized plans.
Q. How do you plan your launch schedule?
= Currently, the demo version is released through Steam to check what the game is, and after the successful obtained of the publisher, it is expected to be available for about a year from that time.
Since I have been a career on the mobile gale side, I am willing to showcase as many platforms as possible in the future. It is first released on a PC, but will be released on another platform sequentially. If you are in charge of the publisher who is looking at the article, please contact us (laughs).
Q. To be honest, every time I play 'Moss' at home, I think of the antique controller that I experienced today. Is there any way to implement it at home?
= I'm actually investigating that part. If a telegraph that can be connected by USB is on the market, it would be possible to use it as a game controller.
In addition, on the side of the official goods, if the plan is a lot of games, and the recognition is increased enough to proceed with the kickstarter, consider the production of a controller similar to the exhibits today with a limited quantity.
